How Long is Invisalign Treatment? And Other Invisalign FAQs

How long is Invisalign treatment? What you need to know.

We often hear the question “How long is Invisalign treatment?” from new patients. Invisalign is a fantastic alternative to traditional braces. Not only are they virtually invisible and don’t make a mark on your smile, but they are removable and more comfortable than other orthodontic treatment plans. But some patients are concerned about getting Invisalign because, though they understand that Invisalign is more comfortable than the alternatives, they worry that the trade off is that it will take much longer.

We have good news: Invisalign can actually take less time than traditional orthodontics!

So How Long Is Invisalign Treatment, Really?

invisalign demoInvisalign, like any other orthodontic treatment plan, works by pushing your teeth into new positions. Unlike braces, which are always working on pushing and pulling your teeth into the correct position, Invisalign only actively works when your aligners are in. So, if you comply with your dentist’s recommendations and wear your aligners 20-22 hours per day, you’ll see some pretty impressive results! The typical length of Invisalign treatment is about 12 months, about half as long as braces.

Other Invisalign FAQs

“How long is Invisalign treatment?” is one of the questions we get most often, but it certainly isn’t the only one!

  • How often are Invisalign aligners adjusted? The typical Invisalign case for adults takes an average of 12 months, and the aligners are changed every two weeks. Braces are adjusted much less often; this is one of the reasons that Invisalign is able to do more work in less time. Another great part about Invisalign is that your adjustments do not require an appointment every two weeks! Your new aligners can be sent to you, so you only need to come in once every six weeks.
  • Are there food restrictions with Invisalign? The greatest advantage of Invisalign treatment is that the aligners can be removed, so you don’t need to avoid your favorite foods during treatment! However, Invisalign aligners only work as long as they are on your teeth, so be sure to wear them often! You should try to wear your aligners for the recommended 22 hours every day.
  • Will Invisalign be comfortable? Overall, the smooth plastic of Invisalign is much more comfortable than metal braces!Of course, because Invisalign aligners are actively shifting your teeth, some mild discomfort can be expected, just like with braces. But if you keep your aligners in more often, your teeth will be more used to the pressure and have an easier time adjusting.
