What To Expect When Getting Crowns In Fox Chase

Have you been experiencing pain when biting down, noticing the beginning of tooth decay, or realizing that some of your teeth have weakened over time? If you’ve experienced any of these dental issues you might need crowns in Fox Chase.

What Kind of Dental Issues Require Crowns?

  • Cosmetic modification
  • A cracked tooth  – noticeable pain when biting down
  • Restoration of an already worn down tooth or broken tooth
  • Protection of a weak tooth to prevent it from breaking
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To cover misshapen or severely discolored teeth

What Should I Expect When I Get A Crown?

Normally, the appointments for receiving a crown at Penn Dental Family Practice are completed in two office visits. At your first appointment one of our Penn Doctors will assess the severity of your tooth to see if it can support a crown. Depending on the condition of the tooth, your dentist may begin to shape your tooth to prepare it for the crown. Alternatively, if there is too much damage or decay to the tooth, your dentist may need to fill it in to fit the crown. Your dentist will then take an impression of your teeth for your permanent crown. At this point, you’ll be fitted for a temporary crown, and wear that until you return to your second visit to get your permanent crown.

After a new crown, there may be some sensitivity to foods and liquids.  This feeling may last a few weeks, but normalcy should resume after that.  To care for your crown the dentist will show you how to correctly floss around your new crown. Continue to brush and floss your teeth daily to maintain the integrity of your crown, and to keep the rest of your teeth healthy.
