A broken tooth can be painful and upsetting and may have you searching for someone skilled in repairing broken teeth. If you have a broken tooth and are looking for the right professionals to handle your case, Penn Dental Family Practice can help. There are a number of different types of breaks you may be suffering from and various treatments depending on the break. We are here to help with whatever you are dealing with.

Different Types of Breaks

There are a number of different types of breaks–some are just a chip and some are more serious. But even a small crack in the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth, can cause pain when chewing or when experiencing temperature changes. A dentist will need to examine your tooth to determine the type of break. Here are the different types of breaks you may be experiencing.

  • A Fractured CuspThis means that the crown, or the top of the tooth, is chipped or cracked off.
  • A Cracked Tooth— This is a crack in the tooth from the crown through the center, but it does not reach the roots.
  • Split Tooth— This is a break from the crown to the root leaving the tooth in two separate pieces. In this situation the whole tooth cannot be saved, but your dentist may be able to save part of it.
  • Root Fracture–This is a crack running from the root up from below the gumline.

Options for Repairing Broken Teeth

There are several different ways of repairing broken teeth. The options vary depending on the type of break. Your dentist will need to examine your teeth to determine which is the best course of action. Some of the options for repairing broken teeth include:

  • FusionIf a piece of tooth broke off and you were able to save it, then it may be possible to fuse the tooth back together to save it.
  • Root Canal— A broken tooth with extensive internal damage can be repaired by replacing the pulp of the tooth with an inert material. After the root canal the dentist will further strengthen the cracked or split tooth with a filling and a crown.
  • Extraction— Sometimes the damage may be too extreme and the tooth cannot be saved. In this situation the tooth will have to be removed.
