At some point in their lives, most patients will need to services of an endodontic specialist. Typically, patients will be referred by their general dentist to seek out an endodontist for a root canal.
Although some patients only come in once they have experienced significant pain, much of this can be avoided. Most general dentists do a great job of determining if a tooth will become an issue (called a “hot tooth) and will recommend endodontics before the problem becomes painful. If you schedule your appointment soon after it is recommended, the procedure can be quite straightforward.
They can expect to receive the Penn Dental experience which includes the latest technology of using microscopes in this highly specialized service. Typically, the procedure will take about an hour, sometimes up to an hour and a half. After the procedure, your tooth may be a little sensitive for a few days, but otherwise, your tooth should be feeling great in no time!
However, if you wait until you are experiencing swelling or pain, we will bring you in immediately to try to alleviate those symptoms. Then, we will set up an appointment for the necessary procedure within a day or two. Because this experience tends to be more painful for patients, we urge you not to wait until you have a “hot tooth”, but to call as soon as your general dentist recommends endodontic services.
The old expressions about the excruciating nature of root canals are actually rather outdated at this point. Because of their specialization and state-of-the-art technology, our endodontists are able to to treat most of their patients quickly and comfortably. Today, root canal therapy is often no more uncomfortable than having a filling. To help ensure that you experience minimal discomfort before, during, and after your procedure, it is important to schedule an appointment before pain or swelling in the affected area begins.
Most insurance plans do cover endodontic therapy. Additionally, at Penn Dental we have a financial coordinator on staff to help you understand and prepare for the cost of any necessary procedures.
