A recent survey by the ADA found that only 4 in 10 Americans floss every day, and 20% never floss. Yet, a similar survey by the American Academy of Periodontology found that 27% of adults lie to their dentists about having brushed their teeth. As painful as it may be, it’s time to come clean: we can tell when you aren’t flossing, and so can your teeth. Although flossing still may never be your favorite activity, there are countless reasons this habit needs to make it into your daily routine.
How long do you really spend brushing your teeth? Although most people report an average of one to two minutes, the reality is that they usually only spend 30 seconds brushing. That’s only ¼ the amount of time you should spend on brushing each day! Instead of staring in the mirror for an arbitrary amount of time, be intentional about those two minutes. Sure, you could get an egg timer or watch the clock, but why not make it fun? Search your music library for a favorite tune close to two minutes and boogie while you brush! (HINT: We Will Rock You by Queen is almost exactly 2 minutes long.) Just don’t get so caught up in the music that your technique suffers.
So far, we’ve looked at dental hygiene secrets that are related to good cleaning habits like brushing and flossing. While these are incredibly important habits to work into your daily routines, good dental hygiene goes further than that. Healthy teeth require a balanced diet that is rich in nutrients. A diet that is high in sugars, however, can increase your risk of tooth decay and cavities. Reducing your intake of sugary beverages like soda, juice, and sweetened tea or coffee is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your dental health.
Take the time to floss properly today. Then do it again tomorrow. Listen to your favorite song while you brush your teeth. Replace your next soda with a glass of water. These are simple changes that you can make today that will have a significant impact on your oral health. In fact, if you start practicing these regularly, you may even be looking forward to your next dentist appointment to show off your good work!
