When you’re looking for options on how to have straight teeth, your first thought may be to get braces to straighten your teeth. Yes, this is one option but not the only option. Here at Penn Dental Family Practice we want to make sure that you are educated in all options possible. That is why we have created information on 3 ways of how to have straight teeth.
You may be wondering, aside from aesthetics, why is it important to have straight teeth? That is a great question.
The alignment of your teeth can have a significant impact on your oral and overall health! In fact, if your teeth are crooked, or you have a crossbite:
You may develop a large amount of plaque buildup over a small amount of time.
You may develop periodontal (gum) disease, increasing your risk of poor bone density, missing teeth and infected gums.
Continual plaque buildup may cause cavities between the crooked teeth.
Fortunately, just because you have crooked teeth now, it does not mean that you are stuck with that smile forever! At Penn Dental Family Practice, we have excellent options that will help you to achieve a straight, beautiful, and healthy smile:
Yes! You guessed it. Traditional braces are the go-to choice for many when they are pondering how to have straight teeth. Especially for young paitents this is a great option because it allows for teeth to grow in as a child grows up. Traditional braces have come a long way in the past 15-20 years. Years ago, braces used to completely overtake every tooth in your mouth with large, ugly metal brackets that had rubber bands attached in every way possible.
However, this has greatly improved with modern techniques! Now, brackets are much smaller and fewer rubber bands are used in the mouth. In fact, if you are an adolescent or an adult with extremely crooked teeth, this may be the best option for you. Treatment can last anywhere from 12-24 months.
Also known as “invisible braces”, Invisalign has become the most desired method of orthodontics. This option is in high demand because of the aesthetic appeal. With Invisalign, you will receive custom clear, smooth, BPA-free aligners that are virtually invisible when placed on your teeth. Every 2 weeks you will wear a new set of aligners until you complete your treatment, normally lasting within 12 months.
This is a great option for someone who does not want to wait 12-24 months for straight teeth, and the severity of the misalignment is minimal. Veneers are made of porcelain, and are bonded to the front side of the teeth to improve size, shape and overall appearance. Although veneers may have to be replaced about every 10 years, they are a wonderful quick-fix option.
