If you are interested in cosmetic dentistry for any reason, you’ve probably heard the word “prosthodontist” being thrown around. But the term “prosthodontist” isn’t the most transparent job description. Where can you find a prosthodontist? What do they do? Why would you choose a prosthodontist over another form of cosmetic dentistry?
If you’re trying to figure out what a “prosthodontist” is, or if you’re trying to find a prosthodontist but don’t know where to start, our list of frequently asked questions can help point the way. Read on for our list of the most important questions to ask when you’re looking for a prosthodontist.
A prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed all four years of dental school, and then has gone on to study for two to three more years in the accredited ADA (American Dental Association) program for replacing and restoring natural teeth. The American College of Prosthodontics has a website where you can learn more about prosthodontics.
While many dentists claim a specialty in “cosmetic dentistry, ” this specialty is not officially recognized in the field by the American Dental Association. This means there are no set standards; ethical or professional, for “cosmetic dentists,” but there are for prosthodontists. When you find a prosthodontist, you’re ensuring that you get a medical professional with years of extra education and the highest professional and ethical standards.
Besides the inherent cosmetic value of having teeth in healthy condition, there are a multitude of medical reasons to replace and restore damaged teeth. When you have a gap in your natural line of teeth, teeth can shift into places where they should not go, causing pain and weakening the root. This can even increase the likelihood of your other teeth falling out. It can also cause some facial tissue to collapse and cave in small areas of your face.
The actual procedure that you will undergo to get the smile you want can change dramatically based on the state of your teeth and what you are looking for, but typically includes some of the following: bleaching, whitening, veneers, crowns, or other restorations like implants, bridges, or dentures.
Some patients worry that once they’ve found a prosthodontist, they will have to keep coming back every few months to maintain their dental appearance. But this is not quite how it works. With a skilled prosthodontist, you can expect your results to last a decade or more, especially the more permanent procedures such as crowns and bridges. If you take good care of your teeth, your prosthodontic procedure could last a lifetime!
